In six years Jamaica Yancy grew a small book club into a multi-city community organization with over 3,500 constituents. Members gather for programming aimed at empowering the black community through social cohesion. Events support the economic social, physical and psychological health needs of African Americans, and it all started with a simple idea. In this talk Jamaica leads participants through her journey from growing up with a single mother in South Los Angeles to building the largest organization of its kind. She shares her secrets for getting "buy in" from complete strangers and developing coalitions in a disparate world.
