When my mother, who was then in her late 80s, had to move from her home of 58 years because she was developing memory and mobility challenges, she quickly changed from the positive person I had always known her to be. This is the woman who took just a month to mourn my late brother's tragic death in his early twenties, but then she went on to take that loss in stride. I started composing happiness affirmations to cheer my mother up. I didn't know if it would work, but I thought it was worth a try. The astounding thing is that it did start to work, and very quickly. By focusing on, and repeating, the positive, my mother started to see the bright side of things. Over the next few years, till she passed away at the age of 90 last year, she dealt with the increasing debilitations of her conditions with a genuine smile. Even as she lost the ability to walk and feed herself, and even, for a while, to talk, her spirit were positive and she was happy. My mother has proven to be a role model for me in that she taught me how happiness is something we need to feel from the inside out. When faced with adversity, as long as we have at least one person who cares about us to help us through our tribulations, happiness is within all of our grasps. This program, which can be as short as 45 minutes, or as long as a 1-1/2 hour workshop, or even a half-day or all-day seminar, looks at happiness and how to achieve it. Happiness at work. Happiness in our relationships with co-workers, our significant other, and with our children, those who are younger and still dependent on us and our older adult children, as well as with our parents, and extended family. Happy workplaces lead to greater productivity and worker retention. What is a happy workplace and how do you achieve it? As the author of two books on work relationships, translated into more than a dozen languages, and several books on time management, in 12 languages, I know what makes for a happy and productive workplace.
