Inviting New Perspectives
Enhance Your Listening, or What Color Is The Ball?

Empty your own presumptions when entering group discussion. Other perspectives can be as vital as your own, but you must be open to receive them! (COLOR one-half of the ping pong ball with a yellow-highlighter. Hold THAT side away from the viewer. Ask what color they see. Note it. Ask another. Note it. Then, slowly turn your hand revealing the other side of the ball that has been colored and not visible to the viewer.) LESSON: Differing perspectives do not have to mean conflict. Each side of the ball was perceived differently. Each was accurate. Each would have presented the viewer an arguable perspective. They can co-exist. Each has validity. Seeking input from many perspectives can lead to a clearer vision of what is really before us. Gather input- perspectives. Develop an enhanced appreciation for input from others before entering into decision mode. Select and evaluate (risk-benefit) each perspective. . Assign weights to the risks as well as the benefits before pursuing design, manufacture, product or service preferences... The exercise enables the group to conclude, objectively, true value derived from seeking collective perspectives. One must listen, select and evaluate openly in order to place the individual, or organization, in a position of advantage...
