Engaging leaders are the key to creating employee engagement

You have heard it many times before – engagement matters. The elusive answer for most leaders lies in how to make it possible. Why is it so hard?!? The truth is that employees want to be engaged - they want their best ideas and creative suggestions to be acted upon. Employees want to bring their brains to work! The solution doesn't so much lie with the employees as it does with their leaders. Cultures and leaders must be ENGAGING to enable employees to be engaged. I wish I had known that earlier in my leadership career. It would have made such a difference in how I approached challenges and, more importantly, how I treated the people that mattered to me the most. As a leader or project manager, you can't have engaged employees without engaging your employees. It's simple. People want to help. They want to be a part of something significant. You have seen the power of highly engaged employees and it probably gives you goose bumps. Why not allow others to get some goose bumps of their own? The leader sets the tone. You must invite engagement! Ask folks their opinion. Let them tell you what they would do if they were in charge. Allow them to take the lead on culturally significant issues. Ask them to "Tell me more." And all the while, you will be sharing your power with them. Employees will listen to leaders they like ... employees will commit action for leaders they trust. And employees will align with leaders they sense “get” them. And these are all key elements I personally first had to learn myself before I could lead an organization to be world class. In this program, I will explore and bust popular myths that are roadblocks to creating a wildly engaged workforce. And the story will be told from the perspective of my not-so-illustrious failings as a young leader. Many personal lessons learned will be shared.
