Home Court Disadvantage
We Refuse to Lose

Black male students are nearly twice as likely to drop out of high school as their white counterparts and are constantly being challenged with overcoming the “Achievement Gap”. So many of these students have immense challenges at home, but this does not have to stop them from being a good students and graduating high school. We must stop looking at students as who they are, but instead see them as who they CAN be. These kids have potential and it is our job to help them reach it. In this program, Larry McKenzie focuses on developing an effective game plan that will allow African American male students also become champions in the classroom and their communities (not just on the court). He explores the importance of building relationships and really getting to know these kids off of the court. Coach McKenzie talks about how systems and structure are imperative in helping these kids achieve in academics and life. As educators and administrators, we must create a game plan to help African American male students reach their full potential. This program is geared towards: • Educators • Administrators Participants will walk away knowing that: 1. They should see kids not for who they are, but what they can be. 2. Even though kids come from a disadvantaged background (free reduced lunch, no dad, challenged mom), it does not have to define them. They can still excel in the classroom and in life. 3. Although it’s a tough job, molding the lives of young people can be life changing.
