“Update your database and your life program will run better.” ABOUT UPDATING YOUR MENTAL PROGRAMMING Since computers are so much a part of our lives and aren't completely unlike our minds in the way that they operate, they make great models for discussing human behavior. Updating the mental programming written on your mental operating system is an excellent way to think about inducing change in our lives. Here's the thing, we are not completely volitional beings as we’d like to believe. The majority of the responses we have are automatic/autonomic. Our minds are great at discerning patterns out of the impossible amounts of data and information contained in every moment of our lives. Those patterns are what our subconscious uses to determine the best automatic response to a situation. Since these patterns are historical, they may not be well tailored for a new situation, which of course, can lead to problems. THE PROGRAM I am an analyst by trade and by nature. Through my own life journey and analysis, I've found that we can alter our thoughts and behavior by updating the information and experiences that our mental computers are operating off of. In this program... 1. I'll explain why trying to improve ourselves through direct effort is impossible. 2. I'll detail why understanding is a much better approach. 3. I'll demonstrate how to spot circumstances and patterned causes of undesired reactions, thoughts and emotions. 4. I’ll show you how to alter any undesired emotion, thought, action by better understanding their patterns and causes. A PEEK INSIDE... THE PROBLEM Our minds recognize patterns and form thought and behavioral responses based off them. These patterns are often an accumulation of disparate and disconnected happenings that we group into useful categories. Often, our intellectual understanding of an event is disproportionate to the response we realize from patterns. After a period of time, our minds collect information and experiences to create solid and reliable programmed responses to situations that the mind believes it has seen before. Absolutely no encounter is the same, but our minds group experiences and knowledge into what can be thought of as categories of related input. The subconscious mind reads a definitively new situation and pulls a response that it has deemed effective, and there it is. Just like that, we’ve spoken or acted counter to what we would like given a second more controlled go at it. THE SOLUTION We can eliminate unwanted responses (thoughts, feelings, actions, emotions) to stimuli by better understanding how and why we do and think certain things. By doing so, we effectively add new data to our life database. New information and experience for our subconscious mind to use like programed instructions on how to respond to a situation. First, what we need to do is look for a pattern when we encounter undesired actions or responses to events. We can’t address a problem until it is known. Unless we are consciously and deliberately thinking or doing something, there is most likely a pattern of circumstances, thoughts, feelings and happenings preceding each undesired response. WHY UNDERSTANDING? Being an analyst, I’ve searched for a universal approach to addressing nearly all things having to do with self-discipline and self-improvement. I found that we can’t improve ourselves because our self-discipline, our will is too finite. That’s right, you and I cannot improve ourselves through direct effort as we would a home. I discovered that all self-improvement and all self-discipline are the result of an improved understanding of self and world. There’s a reason why we are continuing to do or not do the things that we’d like to be or not be. We must do the work to find the cause. Being mindful past noticing a problem and pattern only serves to exhaust us and foster an environment of increased unwanted thinking, emotions, and behavior. THE SECRET Information that is known to be false or irrelevant is not useful for decision making at the conscious or subconscious level. That means getting to a more accurate understanding will irrevocably alter nearly any thought process or behavior. THE RESULT A life transformed deliberately, but with a minimal exertion of will and energy. An existence where we aren’t so exhausted from exercising continuous control and discipline that we are too tired to enjoy the thing we are desperately trying to improve, life.
