New York's Woman in the Iron Coffin
Life and Death in Antebellum New York

You will experience a holistic glimpse into the investigation surrounding the discovery and identification of an African American woman who had died of smallpox and was perfectly preserved in a mid-19th century Fisk iron coffin. With the help of a team of subject experts, including historians, epidemiologists, and a forensic artist, Mr. Warnasch brings this woman back to life and details her connection to Rev. James Pennington. In addition, the story of the woman's life sheds a larger light on the poorly documented lives of free blacks in New York in the 1840s.
