Ronny Jose Diaz is the author of the inspirational memoir, “Hispanic Heritage, my Journey from New Mexico to the Mountains of Central America.” His story details the search for his Latino roots. This effort resulted in an unforgettable odyssey that lead him from his home in Southern New Mexico, to Miami, Florida and into the mountains of Central America. Why did he do this? As a child and young adult, Ronny José Diaz often felt caught between two worlds. He was born with the appearance of his white mother, Evelyn, not the appearance of his dark, Latino father, Alberto.
So, on one side, he had his Hispanic Heritage and the other side Anglo-American culture. At an early age, he realized the insistence of his father to assimilate, that there was no need to learn to speak Spanish or to embrace his Hispanic Heritage. Diaz understood that his father, Alberto, was trying to protect him from prejudice and discrimination, but he realized that both he and his sister were missing an important piece of the puzzle. In order to discover who he truly was as a person, Diaz knew he had to embrace his cultural heritage.
The journey he undertook carried him to the wilds of Central America. Diaz, after graduation from New Mexico State University, joined Peace Corps which lead him to Miami and then into the Central American Countries of Costa Rica and Guatemala. After completing intensive training in a small village near San Jose, Costa Rica, Diaz was transferred to Guatemala. There, in Guatemala, Diaz lived for two years in a small village whose inhabitants were descendants of the great Mayan Civilization. Many versions of history detail the Mayan Empire dying out hundreds of years ago, but Diaz saw firsthand how its legacy has been passed down through each generation.
As Diaz grew closer to his Hispanic Heritage, he also met someone he wanted to share the journey with, detailing his unforgettable first meeting with the woman who would become the love of his life. This love has endured and displays the evidence that love knows no boundaries, borders, walls or limitations. This unique inspirational presentation details his journey but provides the audience with ideas to help them enhance their own personal journey, their journey of life.
