At 19, I was your typical San Diego State University sophomore. Friends, sports, fraternity and most importantly, perfect 20/20 vision. Then it happened with no warning, “no time to prepare” life began to blur. Over two short months I lost central vision in my right eye, followed closely by my left. The diagnosis: a rare genetic disorder called Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), a disease with no treatment and no cure in sight.
At first, I was told by doctors to drop out of college and that losing my vision meant forfeiting my life. I quickly fell into anger and depression, convinced that I would forever be a burden and limited by my disability. But I soon learned that my ability to succeed was stronger than my disability, and that with every challenge comes an opportunity for greatness.
With some hard work and dedication, a year after losing my sight I was able to win the World Blind Golf Championship, created a fundraising bike ride which has raised over $175,000 for LHON research, and graduated with a degree in business. All while advocating for changing perceptions of disability and living a limitless life through features on CNN.com, MTV’s True life, ESPN.com & ABC 20/20.
Now, I empower audiences all over the world, spreading my story of turning trauma into triumph. My mission is to help people realize the potential in obstacles and see challenges as opportunities for success. Although I cannot see my audiences, in each presentation I help them see how to effect positive change into their own lives. I have spoken to corporations, leadership conferences, youth events, and colleges & universites all over the world. Some of my clients have included Aflac, Honda, John Hancock Financial and Wells Fargo.
