Howard Shore garnered his first experience working in a stereotypically dysfunctional family business where leadership was never well defined. He learned what it was like to work in a hostile environment. He witnessed an owner who claimed to know everything there was about his business and industry, worked an incredible number of hours each week, was a fabulous salesman, and yet in 30+ years could not build a business of consequence.
At age 18, he founded his first business. While from many outward appearances, it was a success, it was far from a smooth experience. Over the next three years, he learned many lessons. One of them was how important it was to choose the right market. He had chosen computerized typesetting. For those of you who missed it, computerized typesetting as a standalone business moved from cutting edge to obsolete thanks to technology. Mr. Shore successfully divested himself of the company before that occurred.
Changing direction, Mr. Shore worked for three Fortune 500 companies, all considered prominent in their respective industries. During this time, he worked with some sharp people, got valuable leadership experience, and accomplished great things for his employers. However, as he walked the hallways of these firms, he saw the cartoon world of Dilbert in real life. He describes many of his experiences as ready-made scripts for television sitcoms.
A keen observer, he noted the many opportunities for improvement his employers were overlooking. Mr. Shore fondly compares them to leaky buckets. “I just see profit leaking out of companies right before my eyes, and it drives me crazy.” The solutions to many of these leaks were quite simple, but everyone was so busy at being busy that they were not stopping to realize how much money was draining away.
No matter what his job description was, much of Mr. Shore’s career was spent challenging fellow leaders to stop and recognize the leaks and act to plug them! He was, in effect, an internal business and executive coach with a different title. When he realized his talent and how big a difference he could make in the world, he decided to be a coach full time.
