Award-winning filmmaker, Sylvia Binsfeld studied fine art at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, but then ended up starting a career as an actress. Frustrated with the scripts she was handed, Sylvia very quickly moved to the other side of the camera where she has more control over the messages she is putting out in the world. But soon discovered that only 4% of the films we see are directed by women. There is tremendous power in story, and women's stories or voices weren't be heard. Even the chick-flicks were being directed by men. Any time the yin and yang balance is off like that, it's detrimental to the health of the planet. Sylvia empowers women and girls to take an active leadership role in working to open doors for ourselves in film and media.
Then, a couple years ago, Sylvia Binsfeld read an article by Paul Kingsnorth titled, "The Witness". After decades of fighting to save the environment, Paul stopped, believing no one heard the message in time, and that it’s too late to save us…we will be the first species to cause our own extinction. The top scientists in the world back his observations and have been speaking out for years.
Hearing the urgency, but looking at her children, Sylvia was not quite ready to throw in the towel. She reflected on all of the other concerns she had with what is going on in the world, and thought about what would have enough power to create mass healing, by creating a change in consciousness? The answer came...the media...the media and story has tremendous power with a global reach. But, at this time much of this power has been used in ways harmful to society. So, Sylvia founded the Conscious Media Movement where she encourages filmmakers and writers of ALL genders and ALL genres , to collectively help with the healing of the planet by raising mass conscious through the media. She additionally teaches audience members that there are ways to support this change and start the healing in their lives.
