WHO IS THIS PERSON AND WHY SHOULD I SPEND MY VALUABLE TIME HEARING WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY?
That was the question I ask every time I went to hear a speaker! I believe a speaker should not only have something to say but have an impact on the people that took their time to listen!
I was born the last of four kids to a very middle class family in Jackson, Louisiana. Two things that are significant about this event was the date of the birth April 1 and town Jackson which houses a mental hospital! Of course today I use these factors as the blunt of jokes and an excuse for my behavior from time to time, they came in handy! One event comes to mind, one afternoon my brother David went missing from the living room watching TV and we found him on the back porch sharing supper with an escapee from the hospital. Dad just sent David back into the house and gave the gentleman a ride back to the Big House. So was life in Jackson!
I was big for my age, still am, so I got recruited to play football in the larger town 20 miles from Jackson. Playing organized sports for the first time I was introduced to the quote “This game is 90% attitude and 10% fundamentals.” I guess that quote was used by every coach in the world because during the next 15 years I heard it at least a million times. It did not make any sense the first time or any other time but that is what drove me to find out in fact if there was any truth to the quote. Because if for 15 years we only played with 10% of the total package, what a shame! Kind of like fighting with one hand tied behind your back!
I got a scholarship to play college football and there is was again 90-10, 90-10, 90-10 over and over. I did learn that coaches and other player’s actions and words hurt or helped other young man in their effort to play the game but what did that mean. During my second year the team went 0-11 that caused me to really see the demise of man, people quitting, making excuses and of course blaming everything and everybody. That season made it necessary for me to find out if there really was a 90% part.
After playing my last year of football, the last couple was not really rewarding. I got married and was living in the married dorm next to campus. One morning on my way to class, a guy asked me if I have ever read Napoleon Hill. I said “Who?” He handed me “Success Though a Positive Mental Attitude.” I flipped through a couple of pages and went directly to the library, of course I had to ask someone the directions to the library, remember I was a football player; we never went to a library!
There was the 90% part, hiding in plain sight on the bookshelves, in the library! All those success and motivational writers and speakers, not only Napoleon Hill but Zig Ziglar, Norman Vincent Peale, W Clement Stone, Og Manino and the list go on. Really they all say basically the same thing but with a different twist or story to make a point. The “Principles of Success” are set in stone only the presentation of the material is different from person to person! Now how to prove that the 90% is real and it works!
We now live in Clinton not far from Jackson, Louisiana and I am working at a gravel pit when one of the local dads asks me to coach a high school football team. It was not real high on my list after my college experience but I would be able to prove if the 90% exist. Sharing those “Principles” I found the hardest journey for those guys was the “18 inch journey”. The distance from a thought in your mind and a belief in your heart, once I had moved the “Principles” that 18 inches the rest was easy. Winning was not something we did but being a winner is something we became. Ok that is football but what about the real world, the Business World.
My first stop was with my father-in-law into the world of small time politics. This was really fun building relationships and being able to really help people with real world problems. After he retired I ran twice, lost both times. Didn’t build enough relationships! Next!
During the 80’s really a hard time in the business world, a brother-in-law and I started a company which he still operates today. This was a 12 years journey that allowed me to travel the US and speak at tradeshows and business related events. I found out during this time I enjoyed speaking and most important the ordnance could understand most of what I said, I have a bit of a southern accent. One Korean guy sat through a 20 minute presentation and waited until I got finished and kindly ask me “Do you speak English” and after I laughed out loud ask “Are you from Texas!” By the way I missed that sale!
Then the hardest and longest part of the journey started. In the mid 90’s I left my now ex-brother-in-law and started on a trail to commercially use a process I had patented. I thought in a couple of years I would be the richest man in the world or President of the US or both! Well you already know I lost the elections, I didn’t fare very well on the richest man in the world part either, until 25-30 years later.
But I can truly tell you this ‘IF YOU NEVER QUIT FAILURE WILL!”
This is what I can do for you: if you have people that need a jump start, need to get along better, sales people that need a never quit attitude, players that need to learn about the 90% part before like me they get though playing or a bunch of folks that need a smile on their face and skip in their step! Then I am your man!
“IF YOU NEVER QUIT FAILURE WILL”
First it depends on what you are looking for in a speaker. If you are oking for someone who can help the ordnance to overcome adversity, get from start to go, and then from go to goal and then from goal to goal line. I am that person!
"I wanted to take a minute to let you know how much I enjoyed your motivational sales presentation. I know our team, consisting of Louisiana and Texas John Deere salesmen, will greatly benefit from your keen insight on the "winning attitude" it takes to remain highly motivated and successful in a very competitive market. Again, excellent job....everyone agreed it was time and money well spent. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you again during our upcoming Regional Sales meeting." John Sessums, Regional Sales Manger, Doggett Machinery / John Deere, Baton Rouge, LA
"after listening to your CD for the first time in my life I know what I want and what it will take to get it." Aaron "Boy" Buhler - A high school graduate working at a parts store until he received a CD of Ricky's presentation. He is now attending college something he didn't think was possible until now.
