Change Your Story to Change the World:
The truth about Mental Illness

Creative writing instructor Robert McKee said, “storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today.” Business people know storytelling is the best tool to communicate ideas, persuade others and get what you want. That is why I tell my story about having a mental illness. It took away everything I thought was important: family, career, and nearly my life. Fear of mental illness stigma took away two siblings. My brother and later my sister committed suicide too fearful of stigma to get psychiatric help. My memoir Escape from Myself: A Manic-Depressive’s Journey to Nowhere is my legacy to my grandchildren who may have the bipolar disorder gene and anyone else facing mental illness. I describe the journey in vivid detail that finally brought me to “now here”. I’m here to help a new generation understand mental illness is a disease, not a character flaw. That is the first step in helping reduce the growing suicide rate among young people ages 15-25 (one every 12.8 minutes in the U.S.). The skyrocketing homeless population litters our urban areas. Many of them got there because of untreated mental illness. The new generation can stop scapegoating the mentally ill every time there is a mass shooting. That unsupported blame only reinforces stigma. The bottom line of my talk is, as literary scholar Jonathan Gottschall said, “Humans simply aren’t moved to action by ‘data dumps,’ dense PowerPoint slides, or spreadsheets packed with figures. People are moved by emotion. The best way to emotionally connect other people to our agenda begins with “Once upon a time…”
