What type of leaders produce the best results?
Become a leader who can influence people to voluntarily join with them to make great things happen.

PRESENTED BY:

Don Shapiro takes managers, owners and executives on an eye opening journey into the nature of leadership and what type of leader produces the best results. With his energetic, fun and interactive speaking style, Don shares the latest thinking and research about leadership. He customizes his programs so they hit the bulls eye with each audience, organization and industry. This program inspires people to embrace their role as a leader and become the best leaders possible. Don exposes the five myths of leadership then shares what leadership is so his audiences can embrace their role as a leader. 1. Leadership is not about your title, position, power or authority 2. Leadership is not a skill 3. Leadership is not about having a bigger than life personality 4. Leadership is not about having big, bold, innovative ideas 5. Leadership and management are not the same thing Leadership is about who you are....your character. Your beliefs and attitudes drive how you behave which determines if people trust you. People trust your character...not your title, skills or personality. When you are a trusted leader, you are a leader twenty four hours a day no matter what you are doing because it's who you are. Based on decades of observation, experience, and the latest thinking and research on leadership, Don Shapiro has evolved a definition of a leader and leadership that clarifies what type of leaders produce the best results and what we should aspire to if we want to lead. Leadership voluntarily influences people to take action! Leadership is voluntary influence. That separates it from all other kinds of influence. If people are not acting voluntarily, no leadership is occurring. Leadership must result in action. If there's no action, there's no leadership going on. Only when someone influences others to voluntarily act on an idea has leadership taken place. Leaders build enough trust to influence people to enthusiastically join with them to make great things happen!  Build enough trust - Leadership is about building trust. People will only voluntarily move in the direction we want if they trust us. If you have to order people to do something, that may be required as a manager or parent but it isn't leadership. Trust is the currency of leadership.  Influence people - Leadership is about influence, not ordering, directing, manipulating or anything else that forces someone to act. Leadership and voluntary are married to each other.  Enthusiastically - Only when people do something because they want to are they being influenced by a leader. If they only do it because they have to, no leadership is going on.  Join with - Leaders walk with us and behind us. We don't follow them, we join with them. The concept of leaders and followers reinforces antiquated ideas about what a leader is and does. Effective leaders serve the people they lead with humility.  Make great things happen - Anyone who influences people to do bad things is not a leader. They may be a manipulator, con artist, persuasive or charismatic but they are not a leader. Trusted leaders only influence people to make good and great things happen. They lead with integrity and character. People trust your character...not your title, skills, personality or ideas. Leadership is about who you are, not what you do. It's not a group of methods, skills and techniques you apply when you need to influence people. When you are a leader, it is who you are 24 hours a day. It's a way of living and being, not a task you perform. About Don Shapiro and where these leadership ideas came from... As a consultant, Don has studied hundreds of managers, owners and executives in over 30 industries to determine why some performed better than others. In addition, he has reviewed all the latest empirical research on employee engagement, employee retention, culture, leadership, leadership development practices, and the alignment between strategy and the people who implement strategy. Don first become involved in leadership development in high school where he conducted leadership workshops for the newly elected student body presidents of the 50 Los Angeles Unified School District's high schools. Out of college, he joined a management training program with Lawry's Restaurants where he worked up to general manager. Lawry's has been in business for 93 years because of its focus on leadership and employee relations. He was coached and mentored by some truly legendary leaders. Don built on these foundations as he worked for several companies finally rising to become a senior operations executive and Chief Marketing Officer for a national corporation before starting his consulting practice. As President of First Concepts Consultants, he specializes in assessments, recommendations and implementation assistance for senior officers in the areas of leadership, leadership development, employee engagement, change management, talent management and strategy. Through all this experience, observation, collaboration and research, Don has developed an innovative approach to develop leaders that is based on the latest thinking, practices and research. It represents our most current understanding of what type of leader produces the best results and how to develop individuals to become that type of leader.
