Humor as a Life Saver
Facing the Most Difficult Situations, Successfully and with a Little Humor.

Stress has been a part of human culture since the very beginning. It may be that humor evolved as a coping mechanism to deal with the stress. There is certainly plenty of evidence to demonstrate that, even in the most stressful situations, humor helps people survive. Emergency responders face extreme stress every working day and have to develop a keen sense of humor, often called dark humor, in response. But emergency responders are not alone. Everyone deals with stress everyday, sometimes at a level exceeding what the emergency responder faces. That is why humor is absolutely vital in dealing with the dangers of stress. Unfortunately, not everyone in every job feels comfortable, or able, to use humor to cope. Longtime emergency responder Robert D. Olsen’s talks and videos on using humor in dealing with stress have been revered and used by organizations, large and small, to help motivate and inspire employees. Bob has experienced high levels of stress and has developed a great sense of humor to keep him going. Using humor, he demonstrates not only how and what humor does to get you through, he empowers attendees to develop and use their own inherent humor. It all began when he commanded a search and rescue vessel for the US Coast Guard, responsible for the success of such diverse challenges as aircraft crashes, boat fires and guarding two US Presidents and the Queen of England. After the Coast Guard, Bob became a police officer and an undercover narcotics agent where his sense of humor allowed him to face sometimes devastating tragedies. Upon leaving law enforcement, Bob joined the fire service where he advanced through the leadership ranks retiring after 22 years as a Captain and Training Officer. In the fire service, stress was constant, from dealing with death and destruction to problem solving in the middle of an emergency. As a company officer, Bob helped others to achieve personal and professional contentment while operating in very stressful situations. Bob encourages attendees to find their sense of humor and apply it appropriately to reduce stress and improve their lives and relationships. He always saves time for questions and interaction with attendees. Former attendees to Robert's presentations have responded positively to his style and information: “Outstanding ability to deliver information about the subject in a way that is both effective and enjoyable. His experience shines through and he makes participants understand what is possible and how to achieve what they are seeking.” Randall Jenkins, Fire Chief US Army – Umatilla, Oregon “I have attended multiple conferences and talks with a wide range of presenters and subjects. Robert Olsen ranks among the best I would not hesitate to recommend others to his talks. He has been invited back to future conferences.” Paul Landry, Coordinator California Fire Instructor’s Workshop “The information Mr. Olsen delivered was up to date and relevant to my organization. He has an ability to relate to people at every level, making each participant feel both involved and capable. The feedback I have received from the conference has consistently been positive and most would enthusiastically attend further training with Mr. Olsen.” Mike Dowsett, Health and Safety Manager Raytheon Corporation
