Tales From the Edge of Space -- Pursuing A Dream at Ground Level “Dream Wild” is a phrase to inspire people to achieve the most in life. Candy Torres decided very early in life that being an astronaut was her heart’s desire. It was a time when women were not even allowed to apply for that lofty job. Although she was too short and too near-sighted to get far in the application process, it did not stop her from making it into the space industry in support of space exploration. Her dream gave her a target at which to aim. She had a direction to create her unique path. There were no role models for Torres but then it was the early days of space program. As a teen she joined Civil Air Patrol for her aerospace education. It helped her survive the years of school bullying. Torres uses storytelling illustrated by her photographs to describe how she obtained her first professional job on a major satellite project and, eventually, in the space shuttle and space station programs at NASA-Johnson Space Center. She will speak about how to: Hold onto your childhood imagination Keep your dreams and defend them Live the legacy you wish to leave behind. The presentation can be tailored in length and audience.
