All classroom teachers have the same original passion – to influence children in a positive way to help them become successful in life. First year teachers enter the classroom with eyes wide open, boundless optimism, and a goal of being each student’s “favorite teacher”. However the reality is that about half will leave the profession within five years. Too often, the impetus is cited as “lack of administrative support” brought on by a challenging student’s behaviors in the classroom. A common complaint overheard in the teachers’ lounge is, “I sent him to the office and nothing was done!” Conversely, principals can be overheard with their own banter, “I spend all of my time on two or three students!” Traditional discipline methods employ a series of bribes and threats. Dave’s program is based on the idea that educators should focus on behavior interactions with special attention to the teacher’s actions as the stimulus that most often increases (or decreases) the inappropriate student behaviors. With a non-judgmental, and optimistic manner, Dave’s keen observations and shared techniques infuse a positive approach to challenging situations which has time and again, resulted in beneficial outcomes for both the students, and more importantly, the teacher.
