As a special education teacher for almost a decade, I’ve had the experience of working with diverse groups of students with special needs. Certainly, it takes a certain level of emotional, physical and intellectual stamina to provide the level of care that children with special needs require to reach their academic goals. As teachers, we are professionally trained to provide those needs in a school environment. For parents of special needs children however, much of their support is instinctive and requires a greater level of personal and emotional investment to ensure that their children do well in school. This presentation will emphasize that children with a specific learning disability have unique needs that require unique solutions. By strategically implementing a few key ideas at home, parents can help their children survive and thrive in the academic setting. The presentation will show parents some key ideas that they can immediately implement at home to help their children develop effective learning skills, and position them for a bright future. In this presentation, parents will learn how to: 1. Develop the mindset to conquer obstacles and frustration that arise in their children's learning process 2. Build their children’s confidence and self esteem 3. Teach and encourage their children to express themselves creatively through empowering conversations 4. Create a home environment that fosters learning in school 5. Nurture a learning mindset in their children, beginning with intensive early reading intervention. 6. Create harmony in their own personal life by doing simple things that rejuvenate them 7. Nurture the seed of greatness in their children, and help them discover their areas of strength. 8. Identify available resources and tools to move their children’s education forward.
