Biography

How Do You Get To The Top Of Your World?

And How Do You Get YourTeam to Come To The Top With You?

Imagine you and your people  stretching  and reaching further and higher, striving to surmount the challenges you face in your industry and your organization.  Yet how are you going to motivate your people to dig down deep in themselves and send them the message they have what it takes to reach for your organization's highest goals?

Michael Down can help you with this great challenge.  Michael has a gift for inspiring groups like yours to reach for your highest goals, and have the clarity of purpose to know you can achieve them.  And Michael wants to share this gift with you and your people.

"What a riveting story...such overcoming of adversity...simply the most engaging and inspiring speaker we've ever had"            Matt MacEachern,  BC Lottery Corp

Michael's story itself is an inspiration, which he tells in his "To The Top and Beyond" motivational presentations.  Michael's story is about his personal journey to the summit of Mount Everest, and beyond, to the highest peak on all 7 continents - the "Seven Summits".

Michael's story is about having a dream and turning it into reality, about vision and purpose and setting great goals, and the determination and perseverance and planning it takes to achieve them.  Beginning with a burning vision at the onset of his climbing career to summit the world's highest mountain, it took several expeditions over 25 years to finally achieve his goal - the summit of Mt Everest!

But more than overcoming the usual obstacles and challenges of climbing the world's highest mountains, Michael's story is also about overcoming great adversity.  And seeing a vision through to realization despite overwhelming odds.

Only days after returning from an expedition, Michael's chest was crushed in a head-on car collision.  His injuries were so severe,  he wasn't expected to live.

He did live, but the doctors told him he'd never climb again.  He more than climbed again.

In fact, his near-death experience only left him with an even more burning desire to fulfill his purpose.  Through decades of healing, preparation, and dedication he not only reached the summit of Mt Everest, but went on to achieve mountaineering's "Grand Slam" - the Seven Summits.

Yes, Michael's story itself is an inspiration.  And so is the way he tells his story, and connects with his audience - you - weaving the metaphors of climbing goals, success, and achievement into the tough realities and no less daunting challenges of business and professional life.

"Michael really understood  what was important to our group, and did a brilliant job of tieing in the parallels of climbing Mt Everest."            Wayne Nichol, Telus Corporation

An award-winning writer, accomplished photographer, and impassioned storyteller, Michael is also a seasoned businessman and today is one of the most highly regarded and awarded sales professionals in the Canadian Outdoor industry.

"Tremendous passion and humour...outstanding slides of "National Geographic" quality...an exhilarating evening"             Phil Vechter, Canada Post Corporation

Having built and operated his own businesses, Michael understands business not only from his studies earning a BA in Sociology and Economics at UBC, but from two decades of gritty experience in the sales and marketing trenches of building outdoor brands such as Sierra Designs, The North Face, and currently Cloudveil.  Recognized by the Canadian Outdoor industry as a master salesman - he was awarded the Rennie outstanding sales agent of the year in 1994, the Wigwam outstanding agent in 1995, and the prestigious North Face Summit Award in 1999 - Michael understands the principles and processes of success in sales, marketing, brand-building, customer service, and product development.  And he can communicate these processes to your people using the inspiring metaphors of climbing Mt Everest.

Through business and mountaineering he has also come to learn what it takes to bring together a team, and the principles of teamwork and leadership that will take your team to the top of whatever goal your organization has set for itself.  What ever your organization's particular challenges, Michael's broad experience has developed into an exceptional talent for addressing your group's specific themes, and bringing them down to earth through the inspiring metaphors of climbing Mt Everest.

How About An Example?

As an example, maybe one of your themes is risk-taking.  Perhaps you need your group to step a little bit - or perhaps a lot - out of its usual routines, and take more risks in driving your organization forward.

Michael has a well-honed understanding of risk-taking developed from safely navigating the most treacherous passages in the world's highest places.  Not only has he climbed on the Seven Summits.  Not only has he summited Mt Everest.  For thirty years Michael has been at the forefront of technical alpine climbing, having made dozens of technically difficult first ascents on many of North America's greatest mountains.  Mountains you probably never heard of, but are legendary as extreme challenges in the hard-core mountaineering world.  Mountains like Logan, St Elias, Fairweather, Waddington, The Devil's Thumb, and Lotus Flower Tower.

This an extreme, high risk game, only for elite mountaineers.  But talk to Michael's peers, and they'll tell you he's very safe, measured, and cautious - sometimes too much so!  How has Michael enjoyed such success and longevity in such a high-risk game?  Its all in his approach to the containment of risk.

Its a process Michael began to learn early in his career, as he became at the age of 21 the youngest certified mountain guide in Canadian history.  And it really fires your imagination when he tells his story of turning back down from high on the mountain not only on his first expedition to Everest, not just again on his second expedition, but three times before he finally gained the very Top of The World, and Beyond.  And its just one of the many life lessons that can apply to your organization  Michael wants to share with your group.

"He even got us accountants excited, and had us feeling like we were with him on the mountain stretching our limits...we're using Michael's inspired message of achieving great goals to ramp up an atmosphere of greater success in our business"                                             Hugh Livingstone, Mackay LLP

So don't expect Michael to just motivate your people.  Expect him to inspire you to reach for the greatest heights you can dream.  Call Michael on his cell phone now, at 604-603-7881.  Call him right now, and explore with him how Michael can help you inspire your people to reach To The Top and Beyond!
