Biography

THE EVOLUTION OF A LINCOLN NERD

I hold a BA in history from Sonoma State University [California] and an MA in history from Queen’s University [Northern Ireland]. I’ve spent the bulk of my career as a teacher but I’ve also had enriching stints as a free-lance journalist, a business owner, a house painter, a professional musician, a grants writer, even a Hospice volunteer. My interest in Lincoln started with a Lincoln talk I gave in high school and simmered on the back-burner in the decades since then as I read my way through a fairly respectable Lincoln-Civil War library.

WIFE BEATERS, DRUG DEALERS & ABRAHAM LINCOLN!

Yet I never actually NEEDED Lincoln in any of the jobs I took – until the last teaching one just before retirement. That was a 13-year stretch as a teacher in a California State Prison. These guys can’t read a bus timetable, don’t know how to write a check, don’t know the words to “Jingle Bells!” – they’re way on the far side of zero. They also are in desperate need of role models, and I figured, “Lincoln’s the best this country has ever produced, so why settle for any second-stringers?”

SUBLIMINAL ADVERTISING TO THE RESCUE!

Lincoln first made it into my prison classroom as a writing prompt, but I quickly discarded that idea: took too much time. I wanted something

  • shorter,
  • sharper,
  • something I could use every day,
  • something more in keeping with their nano-second attention span.

Then I stumbled onto this strategy: I would read excerpts from what came to be my calendar-based book, “Lincoln 365” – I would read them in the morning and then leave it, with no discussion, and get on with the rest of the day’s work. Tomorrow I’d read tomorrow’s excerpt, and in 365 days, yesterday’s. Drip-drip-drip: subliminal advertising at its best!

LINCOLN’S PATRIOTISM: THE ANTEDOTE

With retirement looming, the following idea struck me: if Lincoln can entice wife-beaters and drug dealers into seeing the other guy’s point of view, he just might impact the sad, silly, dangerous state of political discourse in our day.

DO YOU WANT WHAT I WANT?

I want to empower high school and college kids with Lincoln’s example. I want to expose them to this battle-tested idealist who won out massively in the end but didn’t sell his soul to do it.

I want them, just like Lincoln,

  • to know it’s ok to be different;
  • to live completely comfortable inside their own skin;
  • to shine brightly in a world of leadership look-alikes;
  • to accentuate their love of country over their love of party.

The Return-On-Investment tool to assure success is the drip-drip-drip of “Lincoln 365,” both in print and on Youtube.

To do all that I want to appeal to you lovers of this country sick to death of the corrosive effects on Democracy of calcified gridlock; I want to take this nation back from the pompous anemia of the Fineas T. Windbags we are, unfortunately, all so familiar with.

IF YOU AGREE…

If I just rang your bell, and you’re a high school teacher or administrator, or a faculty advisor, say, to a college service club, get in touch and let’s see if, to paraphrase Steve Jobs, we might make a dent in our POLITICAL universe!

Publications

  • "Lincoln 365," calendar-based, was written over 13 years for convicted felons in a California state prison classroom. It is a series of short stories about, or quotes from, Abraham Lincoln coupled with a quote from one other authority - a blending of Lincoln and, say, Teddy Roosevelt, or Lincoln and Socrates that utilizes the irresistible, drip-drip-drip power of subliminal advertising; over the course of 365 days, these guys actually morphed before my very eyes! Like Lincoln, - they became more comfortable at living inside their own skin, - they developed a gradually-increased ability to laugh at themselves, - they displayed a heightened sensitivity to the other guy's point of view. What worked for wife beaters and drug dealers will work for you and your people! March 31: "I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me." [Abraham Lincoln] and "I get by with a little help from my friends." [John Lennon] April 3: "If this is coffee please bring me some tea; but if this is tea please bring me some coffee." [Abraham Lincoln] and "The most certain sign of wisdom is cheerfulness." {Michel de Montaigne] December 25: "To ease another's heartache is to forget one's own." {Abraham Lincoln] and "Ultimately magic finds you, if you let it." [Tony Wheeler] Available in printed [$20] or PDF [$6] format.
  • "The World of Abraham Lincoln" is a 4-CD set that contains little known facts about Lincoln’s life and times including “Lincoln in the Caucasus Mountains?!” “Lincoln as Country Bumpkin,” “That Fellow’s Smarter Than He Looks!” “The Lincoln Assassination," etc. Bonus section on Civil War music. Listen to the first entry as a free 5-minute teaser, “Lincoln in the Caucasus Mountains?!” [Available at http://lucidspeaker.com/audience.html] It describes what the famous Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy learned about Lincoln in the wilds of the Caucasus mountains – 40 years after Lincoln’s death and half a world away! Available as a 4-CD set [$25] or as an MP3 download [$6].
  • “The Wit & Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln. CD. Lincoln suffered from chronic clinical depression – so much so that in the 1840’s he was on the business end of a suicide watch! His drug of choice was humor – “The Wit & Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln” contains samples of that drug of choice! “If I ever find a man uglier than myself I’ll shoot the wretch and put him out of his misery.” “How long are your legs, Mr. President?” “Oh, long enough to reach the ground.” “About some men it can truthfully be said that the girls make fools of them, but that cannot be said of me. In my case I most definitely make a fool of myself.” 68 minutes. Available in CD [$5] or MP3 [$2.95] format.
