As a cross country and track& field coach at Iowa City West High School, Mike's teams have achieved phenomenal success having won 8 State Championship team titles in the last 10 years. His cross country teams have been nationally ranked for 9 straight years.
Mike has been recognized by his peers at the highest level, having been selected as the State Coach of the Year or the State At-Large Coach of the Year 13 times over the last 11 years. In 2004 Mike was voted both the State Cross Country Coach of the Year and the State Track & Field Coach of the Year as well as being nominated for the National Federation of High Schools Girls Cross Country National Coach of the Year.
