Mikal is a certified Diversity and Cultural Competency trainer and for over a decade has successfully brought diverse groups together for the common good. In 2004, Mikal served as a charter member of the City of Portland's Bureau of Development Services (BDS), Diversity Committee and was selected to chair the committee. In 2006 he made significant contributions in the drafting of the bureau's first Diversity Development Program which improved outreach and hiring efforts for unrepresentative groups. And he help create the Bureau's Diversity Commitment Document in spring 2009, which became part of the governing document for management. The BDS Diversity Committee under Mikal's leadership received regional recognition in 2008, when it was awarded the City of Portland's Bureau Diversity Champion Award. And Mikal received the City of Portland's Individual Contributor Award for Diversity, at the Annual Regional City / County Diversity Conference, held at the Oregon Convention Center. Mikal also served as the Vice Chair of the Diverse and Empowered Employees of Portland (DEEP), a networking, resource, and support mechanism developed by city employees for city employees. Mikal made important contributions to drafting policy and procedure allowing the establishment of a network of affinity groups by City employees throughout the City of Portland. Mikal's responsibility as Vice Chair included group and media presentations as well as outreach and recruitment.
Mikal is the founder of Time 2 Act Now Communications, a for profit enterprise that provides personal coaching, lectures, and seminars. Mikal has over ten-years of experience as a talk show host, hosting a local public access TV Show titled, Developments in Diversity. His popularity has made him a frequent guest host on local TV and Radio talk shows. And his charismatic voice was aired in Black History Month in a radio commercial on Clear Channel Radio Station 103 fm 2008
Mikal Is the Director the Oregon Islamic Chaplains Organization (OICO) and through OICO he works with other faith based groups and institutions to address social concerns such as homelessness, AIDS awareness, infant mortality, community violence, criminal justice inequities, and community re-entry of incarcerated people.
Mikal Shabazz is an Imam (religious leader) in the Islamic faith and lectures at mosques in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington areas and where he leads weekend discussions with young men and women, and also directs the youth activities at Vancouver Washington Islamic Center.
