For a quarter-century, Jathan has been helping employers maximize employee productivity, and optimize employee-employer relationships.
His work has evolved from “fire fighting” (litigating workplace disputes) to “fire prevention” (helping employers avoid claims while improving employee relations and organizational effectiveness).
Jathan is the author of "Managing to Stay out of Court: How to Avoid the 8 Deadly Sins of Mismanagement" (SHRM and Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2005), described by the Library Journal as “an extraordinarily useful book that will benefit managers and workers. Strongly recommended for all business collections.”
He is also the author of "The Star Profile: A Management Tool to Unleash Employee Potential" (Davies-Black Publishing, 2008), winner of the 2009 Independent Publishing Professionals Award Gold Medal for business, and given five stars by the Midwest Book Review, deemed as “a guide to crafting communication tools that cut straight to the point, don’t waste the reader’s or listener’s time, yet remain highly effective.”
He is a contributing editor to "HR Specialist" and frequently writes for "HR Magazine", where his articles address management, HR and employment law issues. His work is included in the book "HR Magazine’s Guide to Managing People" (SHRM, 2006).
A member of the National Speakers Association, Jathan has given presentations and workshops for employers, trade associations and other groups in over 30 states and Canada. He is listed in the SHRM Recommended Speakers Directory.
A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and Indiana University, Jathan is a partner in the Labor & Employment Group at Ater Wynne LLP, with offices in Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Salt Lake City and Menlo Park, California. He is a member of the bar in Oregon, Utah, Washington, New York, Idaho and Wyoming, the Management Labor and Employment Roundtable and the National Arbitration Forum.
Jathan was named 2005 Employment Lawyer of the Year in Utah, where he established an employment law boutique firm, Janove Baar Associates, in Salt Lake City, before moving to Portland. He is listed in Chambers USA’s America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and in Best Lawyers in America. He was named 2006 Citizen Lawyer of the Year by the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, Salt Lake Chapter.
