Biography

Today, I make my living helping women market their businesses and themselves. But just a few years ago, I hated marketing.

Back then, I was the editor of an entertainment magazine, and my job revolved around advertising revenue. There was never enough.

I did get to talk to celebrities, and Dennis Miller once complimented me on my interviewing style. Most days, though, I spent countless hours in sales meetings, only to race back to my desk and edit the monthly list of happy hour specials. Not very fulfilling.

This stress made me pay attention. I started reading things like ads, press kits and web pages more closely. And I realized that many were poorly worded, riddled with errors and ultimately, ineffective.

Hey, I can write better than that! I thought. So I quit my job to become a freelance copywriter.

Only one problem: I knew nothing about marketing. And suddenly there I was, in a job where I not only had to write marketing materials—I also had to market my services. Otherwise: no business, and no money.

I started reading every marketing book I could find, but none addressed the discomfort I felt when speaking about my strengths, or asking for a sale. Worse, most books suggested high-pressure sales techniques that left me feeling queasy.

Fast-forward three years. I’m now a marketing consultant, author, and frequent guest speaker on women's business issues. I love my job. But it took me a long time to realize that marketing is fun. And more importantly, it doesn’t require you to change who you are.

Just because marketing and sales are male-dominated fields doesn’t mean women can’t succeed. In fact, we have a number of advantages over men:

  • We’re good at building relationships.
  • We’re good at reading body language.
  • We’re good at connecting on an emotional level.

All of these things can help us market ourselves and make sales.
